Job Title: Resident Engineer (RE)

  Location: Chicagoland and surrounding regions

Position Overview:

The Resident Engineer (RE) is the on-site representative of the client (IDOT or Illinois Tollway) responsible for managing, supervising, and coordinating all construction activities for transportation infrastructure projects. This includes ensuring compliance with project plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. The RE acts as the primary liaison between the contractor, the agency, and the engineering/design teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  Construction Management:

  • Oversee day-to-day field activities and ensure that all construction work complies with IDOT or Tollway specifications and standards.
  • Monitor contractor performance, quality of work, materials, and adherence to the construction schedule.
  • Coordinate and schedule field inspections, material testing, and subcontractor work.


 Project Administration:

  • Prepare and review daily inspection reports, pay estimates, and change order documentation.
  • Maintain detailed project records, including field books, correspondence, RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and photos.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting to IDOT/Tollway using systems such as ICORS (IDOT) and PMO (Tollway).
  • Manage project budgets and track quantities.


Communication & Coordination:

  • Serve as the point of contact between IDOT/Tollway, contractors, municipalities, utility companies, and other stakeholders.
  • Conduct regular progress meetings with the contractor and project stakeholders.
  • Resolve field issues promptly, escalating complex matters to senior staff or client representatives.


Quality Assurance & Safety:

  • Enforce safety protocols and ensure compliance with OSHA and agency standards.
  • Review and approve work zones, traffic control setups, and detours.
  • Conduct inspections for work acceptance and project closeout.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Illinois preferred or ability to obtain.
  • Minimum 5–10 years of relevant experience with IDOT and/or Tollway projects.
  • Strong knowledge of IDOT Standard Specifications and Tollway Supplemental  Specifications.
  • Familiarity with CMMS (IDOT), e-Builder/PMO (Tollway), and construction documentation software.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with roadway and bridge construction, site grading, drainage systems, and utility coordination.
  • Proficiency in interpreting construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Knowledge of pay item tracking, quantity computations, and change order negotiations.
